Your skin secretions are like the icing on top of a cake... essential!
When treating the skin, in any situation, keeping your skin’s barriers + secretion production at a healthy rate is always a factor of concern when performing treatments & designing a skincare regimen to support your skin during the process of reaching your goals.
Your skin secretions include:
• Sebum (oil)
• Sudoriferous production (sweat)
• EFA’s (essential fatty acids)
• Linoleic acid
• Oleic acid
• Urea
• Cholesterol
• Ceramides
• Lipids
• & so so many more!
1. Act as a Protective Skin Barrier
Sebum (oil) - Suderiferous production (sweat) linoleic acid, oleic acid, cholesterol, urea, fatty acids + microflora only name a few secretions and natural moisturizing factors that protect your skin cells agains free radicals, harmful pollutants/chemicals, dust/dirt/allergens, & foreign bacteria/viruses that your skin is exposed to on a daily basis.
2. Provide Nourishment for the Epidermis
Think of your skin cells as living humans (as they are too, living) Your cells need a well rounded, nutrient dense diet in order to withstand damage, repair that damage, and properly perform their daily functions.
If your skin cells do not have the adequate nutrition, they can become unstable, frantic, and unfocused on their daily tasks, as they are starved of their fuel needed to energize their expedition to achieve your skin health.
3. Aids in Regulating Body Temperature
When your body temperature reaches a higher degree than the traditional internal temperature of -98 degrees Fahrenheit, your body begins to overheat, triggering your SUDERIFEROUS GLANDS to stimulate SWEAT. This creates a wet layer of secretion on the surface of your skin, allowing the natural environment of the earth's wind to work with your body secretions to begin cooling the body back to normal.
4. Protecting your Microbiome
Not only does your skin retain multiple types of natural moisturizing factors, it also retains many forms of different microbes creating your skin's microbiome - or family of bacteria, viruses, candida, etc.
The accumulation and retention of different forms of microbes allows your skin to create a strong defense to other types of bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. that your skin could be exposed to, protecting the natural flora + pH of your skin's ecosystem. Without microbes, your skin wouldn't be able to withstand any type of environment.
In Conclusion
Depending on your skin, genetics, environment & health, this will determine the rate level of your secretions and how that will create an environment for your skin cells topically.
The goal is NEVER to inhibit your skin from creating these secretions, even when treating acne + oily skin, but to regulate them so they do not over-accumulate in the skin and return that rate to a healthy level.
