Anti-Androgen Support 101

Anti-Androgen Support 101

Have you been experiencing acne, oily skin, or thinning hair? And hair in places you don’t want it. Maybe you also notice irregular periods and irritability. Together, these can be symptoms of an overproduction of androgen hormones. (and, for some, lead to a diagnosis of PCOS). Androgens are hormones that contribute to growth and reproduction in both men and women.

Made in the ovaries and adrenals of women, androgens are a group of sex hormones that include testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA, DHEA-S and DHT.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For women, they play a role in kick starting puberty (and stimulating pubic/underarm hair) and help regulate reproductive, liver, kidney, bone and muscle health. They’re also an important part of estrogen synthesis and libido. But sometimes the body can overproduce them…which leads to the not so fun symptoms we mentioned above.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are a few reasons why this happens & tips to help!
🩸 Blood sugar imbalances (don’t skip meals + eat protein, fibre and healthy fats at every meal + avoid refined/sugary foods).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

💊 Post-pill androgen rebound (work with a practitioner to restore nutrient deficiencies, repair the gut, support liver health and rebalance hormones).

😥 Chronic stress (include stress reduce practices + go to bed earlier/get quality sleep)

🔥 Chronic Inflammation (focus on an anti-inflammatory diet + repair the gut/address yeast or bacterial overgrowths).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to working through those areas, you can include natural anti-androgen supplements listed below...

  • Green Tea Extract
  • Licorice Root
  • Reishi Mushroom
  • White Peony
  • Saw Palmetto
  • Spearmint
  • Stinging Nettle
  • Tribulus
  • Zinc ⠀⠀⠀⠀

ALWAYS work with a practitioner before adding in supplementation. Don’t self analyze and blindly take a supplement without knowing if it’s suitable for your health situation.
