Understanding Different Types of Chemical Peels

As a results-driven esthetician, one of the services I perform almost daily in the treatment room is chemical peels.

1. Chemical peels are considered one of the most effective cosmetic treatments in the field of dermatology. A chemical peel is a type of skin resurfacing treatment that utilizes a chemical solution to remove outer layers of dead skin cells, aiming to diminish the appearance of acne, acne scars, aging, and pigment concerns.
Chemical peels are categorized based on their depth, which determines the intensity and resulting effects.

2. Superficial peels consist of mild peeling agents formulated to gently exfoliate the top layer of the skin without causing any downtime, visible peeling, or significant redness. I often perform superficial peels for clients participating in acne bootcamps. Due to their mild nature, these peels can be repeated every two weeks.

3. Medium depth peels are quite popular due to their ability to achieve results relatively quickly. They penetrate the top of the dermis which may cause more stinging, discomfort, and peeling for a few days. Because these peels are more exfoliating, they can be done on a monthly basis.

4. Deep peels, on the other hand, are beyond the scope of an esthetician's practice as they penetrate deeply into the dermis. They must be administered by a dermatologist. Deep peels are highly effective in dramatically reducing the appearance of skin flaws. However, they are typically a one-time treatment and tend to be stronger and more painful. Patients must be prepared for several weeks of downtime and often need to prepare their skin for weeks or months before undergoing the treatment.

In summary, chemical peels are a powerful skin resurfacing treatment. They are categorized based on depth, ranging from gentle superficial peels with no downtime, to deeper peels administered by dermatologists. These treatments can truly transform your skin. If your trusted esthetician recommends a peel for your skin concern, embrace the opportunity. With their expertise and guidance, you're on your way to unlocking a brand new complexion.
