Don’t neglect the neck! I'm sure you've heard the saying, but let’s actually talk about why this is important in your skincare routine, and how to care for it properly.
-
The skin on your neck is very different than the skin on your face.
-
Neck skin is much thinner! With the skin being thinner on this area of your body, it’s also a bit more sensitive and delicate. Skin in this area is also more susceptible to sun damage. So sunscreen is a must in this area, make sure to bring your sunscreen into the neck and décolleté daily.
-
Fewer sebaceous glands reside in this area. This means the skin doesn’t produce as much oil and can become easily dry and dehydrated. Don’t stop your hydrating products at the chin, pull them down into the neck.
-
The neck shows its age faster than the face. There is less collagen and elastin in this area. Along with its thinness and tendency for sun damage, crepey, sagging skin will appear sooner on the neck than the face.
-
Avoid over exfoliation! It’s important to keep cell turnover happening to keep the area youthful in appearance, but do so cautiously. Use of retinols and other exfoliants may need to be less frequent in this area in comparison to the face. Introduce them slowly!
- Avoid Benzoyl Peroxide in the neck area. Benzoyl Peroxide is fantastic for acne but can be too drying for the neck. It’s best to keep it off the area completely to avoid irritation.
Remember, don’t neglect the neck, but also be mindful of what belongs there and how to care for it properly.
