We all know how stubborn acne can be! It affects millions worldwide and often prompts those that suffer with it to seek various remedies. But one of the things to consider and recognize is the role of nutrition and specific nutrients in skin health.
One nutrient is magnesium, it is a mineral that plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions and offers significant benefits for managing acne. Its role for the skin is so crucial because it helps regulate cellular functions reduces inflammation, and balances hormones, all of which are essential in maintaining clear skin. There are several forms of magnesium however when talking about acne and repairing the skin barrier you want to choose the right form, specifically magnesium glycinate. This particular form helps to manage blood sugar. Spikes in blood sugar can lead to increased insulin levels, which can then trigger excess oil production and clogged pores so the magnesium glycinate helps to regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of acne associated with insulin spikes.
But how do you incorporate it into your diet?
Magnesium can be found in rich foods like chia seeds, almonds, spinach, kale, cashews , avocado, brown rice, black beans etc but magnesium supplements are also available.
As an acne specialist I not only educate my clients on what triggers your acne but what helps to clear it and maintain it. So if you are suffering from acne and you’ve tried everything including buying tons of skincare products and nothing is working then your body could be telling you that you have a magnesium deficiency. About 70-75% of the US population has a magnesium deficiency. Consult with your doctor to see if you are magnesium deficient.
By incorporating those rich foods and supplements into your diet and having a skin care routine to help clear you of your acne, each method can contribute to better skin health and acne management.
