Ingredients: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly.

Ingredients: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly.

Have you ever taken the time to look at what actually goes on in your skincare? I think today might be that day. Ingredients and labels are not only looked past and missed, but people don’t know what they mean or what their benefits are. I’m going to share some basic skin care fundamentals, the ingredients you want to make sure are in your skincare, and the ingredients you want to run far away from.

First, you want to make sure none of your products have over 60+ ingredients. Having too many ingredients in one little bottle is just not a good idea because this makes the elements less potent and effective. More does not always mean more results. Focus on having at least 1-2 products in the A.M, a physical sunscreen, and one cream at night. Once you have a basic skincare regimen you can start looking to add ingredients that target your specific skin concerns.

The Good

The good ingredients that you want to be on the lookout for are Beta Glucan, Mandelic Acid, Licorice Root extracts, Kojic Acid, and Retinoids (aka Vitamin A’s). These ingredients in your skincare products will help brighten your skin, as well as aid in hyperpigmentation/ hypopigmentation. If you are looking for more soothing and calming elements in your products that help with dryness, redness, irritation look for Manuka Honey, Green tea, Aloe Vera, Allantoin, Chamomile, Colloidal Oatmeal, and Willow Herb.

The Bad

There are many different types of bad ingredients or as I like to say “run FAR away from” products. parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, phthalates, and formaldehyde. If you have any of these ingredients they might cause you to have breakouts, skin irritation, and redness. The other elements you want to be on the lookout for are essential oils, synthetic fragrances, and synthetic coloring. These have no added benefits for your skin and can irritate.

The Consensus

Our skin is very delicate and why not know exactly how to treat it. Look for the ingredients that will help you achieve the results you're looking for and make sure you do your research on everything that is in your products. Your skin will thank you later.
