So.. Should You Pop That Pimple?

Pimples form when the pores on your skin become blocked. Hormones, bacteria, oils, and dead skin cells on your face can trigger and the formation of acne.

Why You Shouldn’t Pop That Pimple

It could create scarring and resulting melasma or discoloration on your skin that may take a long time to equalize with your skin tone, leaving a semi-permanent mark. Deeper pimples or cysts may cause more damage and leave "craters".

Popping a pimple could spread the bacteria and pus from the infected pore to surrounding pores in the area. Also, squeezing pustule pimples can sometimes break the membrane surrounding the pimple that is still developing under the skin. This releases the pus in the surrounding tissue and may lead to infection.

Lastly, popping a pimple can slow down the skin healing process; avoid if you can.

If You Must Pop That Pimple

Wash your hands and affected skin area thoroughly. Use of a cleansing towel, such as Clean Towels, is preferred.

For a pustule, make sure the white on the skin is visible. Popping too early can cause you pain and scarring. With two q-tips or fingers wrapped in gauze, apply light and slow pressure to both sides of the pimple. Try different positioning and directions to determine the direction which the pore will release (for instance, maybe you need to push upward or from the left side, or both) until the skin pops and you can squeeze out the pus or oil that clogged the pore.

For blackheads and whiteheads, use extractor kits available at your local pharmacy. Make sure to properly clean the tools before every use. Avoid extracting any pimples that require excessive force or those requiring the need to pierce the skin.

Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the pimple area. This will help ensure you don’t spread bacteria to other parts of your skin.

Do not try extraction on the same pimple more than once. This can irritate the skin and cause further trauma.

Preventive Care

And most importantly, here are some ways you can prevent acne breakouts:

  1. Avoid touching your face unnecessarily. This will help avoid spreading dirt and bacteria to your skin and pores.
  2. Clean your skin after a workout or physical activity by showering or washing your face.
  3. Clean your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. Harsher cleansers can actually cause more breakouts.
  4. Let your skin heal on its own if you can.
  5. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist about your acne breakouts to find the most effective solution.
