benzoyl peroxide vs. salicylic acid

& which is best for treating acne

If you have battled acne at any point in your life, then you are likely familiar with both Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid. But which one is better? Do you even have to choose?

Salicylic Acid is an oil-soluble Beta Hydroxy Acid that is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and exfoliating. Because it is oil-soluble (unlike Glycolic Acid for example), it can penetrate deeper into the pore to clear up oil and skin cell build up. This is important because acne is caused by retention hyperkeratosis, the accelerated shedding of dead skin cells made cohesive by excess oil. If you are suffering from mild acne breakouts, adding a Salicylic serum to your regimen is an excellent way to start the clearing process. You can also expect to see a brighter, healthier complexion after adding Salicylic to your regimen.

Benzoyl Peroxide works in a similar manner; exfoliating deep in the pore to clear the dead skin cell build up and killing bacteria. It is commonly sold as a spot treatment, but it is better utilized as a preventative product. Continued use of Benzoyl Peroxide keeps the follicle clear and prevents the formation of the microcomedone, the beginning of all acne. This is best utilized by someone suffering from moderate to severe acne and someone that has oily skin. Benzoyl Peroxide can be extremely drying so it is important to start on a low percentage and keep your skin hydrated.

If you are suffering from moderate to severe acne, you may need to use both Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid. Working with a Licensed Esthetician that specializes in the treatment of acne is the best way to obtain the best routine for your unique situation.
