1 . Their environmental impact
Approximately 17 trees are required to create 1 ton of paper towels, and the US alone produces roughly 3,000 tons per day. So, thats about 51,000 trees per day, and 18 million per year! Our Clean Towels are made from viscose that is harvested by sustainably managed eucalyptus tree plantations. Eucalyptus trees take only 5-7 years to reach maturity. This combines a steady, sustainable supply with rapid reforestation when harvested areas are replanted. Beyond the source, the water used in the process of making the viscose is recycled and reused. Plus, for each order , Clean Skin Club plants a tree through 400trees!
2. They're made with harsh chemicals
Most paper towels are made with two harsh chemicals: chlorine and formaldehyde. The chlorine is commonly used to to make the paper towel white in color. The by-products of using Chlorine for bleaching are toxins such as dioxin and furans, which are known to be dangerous to the human body. Then there is Formaldehyde which is used “to improve the wet-strength and other “valued” characteristics of paper and paper products”. Formaldehyde is also a known carcinogen.
3. One time use only
Once you use a paper towel to clean up a mess or spill, almost every time the paper towel goes straight to the garbage after. They're hardly durable or absorbent enough to rinse, wring, and reuse.
4. They're not gentle on your skin
Let's be honest, paper towels are not very soft. For those of you who use paper towels to dry your face- you have the right idea, however, they're just not gentle enough on your skin. The rough texture and general stiffness, paired with the chlorine used to dye the paper towel white, is simply too harsh to use on your face.
5. One is not enough
Paper towels are not nearly absorbent or durable enough for cleaning up spills and messes- and thats why you end up unraveling a quarter of the roll. Many people use rags or sponges in its place. However, rags and sponges are excellent breeding grounds for bacteria, which contradicts cleaning in the first place!
Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day.

In the beginning stages of Clean Skin Club, amidst all the research we were doing for product development, we stumbled upon one particularly interesting study about towels. According to research conducted by Charles Gerba, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona- bathroom towels carry an incredible amount of bacteria.
Now they really grabbed our attention. I mean, it made perfect sense after all. Of course, bacteria is existing everywhere in our lives, and in many ways completely necessary for our immunity. However, the thought of all the bacteria living in a bathroom becoming multiplied, then being put back onto your face, around your eyes, nose, and mouth- was sickening. We couldn’t believe that with this information so readily available, why there wasn’t something more sanitary out there.
When we finally made the Clean Towels, we were totally unsure of how things would go. We were officially pioneers on uncharted territory. We knew what we had was great, but we didn’t fully realize what kind of product we had on our hands. It didn’t take long for the Clean Towels to become a staple in a customers skincare routine. It was the one thing that people were missing, without even realizing it. Eventually we took to social media and watched everything unfold simply through word of mouth and the power of sharing with others. Not only did this help us fully embrace our new creation, but also the community we were gathering across the nation, with such a diverse group of people in all age groups. We felt finally, that the Clean Skin Club was becoming complete.
